The research paper “Mapping Digital Technologies in Healthcare: Analysis of Highly Cited Papers” by Dalia Suša Vugec and Ana-Marija Stjepić has been published in the Business Systems Research Journal, Volume 17, Issue 2 (September 2026).
The study aimed to map the digital technologies represented in highly cited healthcare research within the 2015–2025 search period. Of the 506 Highly Cited Papers identified through a search of the Web of Science Core Collection, 388 were included in the analysis following title and abstract screening. Citation indicators and VOSviewer analyses were used to examine the development of the field, citation impact, research collaboration patterns, and principal thematic areas.
The results show that artificial intelligence, telemedicine, the Internet of Things and smart healthcare, electronic health records, mobile health, wearable technologies, and conversational agents dominate the field. The analysis also identified themes related to integration, privacy, security, access, technology adoption, trust, literacy, and equity.
The paper highlights that digital technologies in healthcare should be examined not only by type, but also in terms of their use, implementation, and user experience. The findings provide a basis for further DIGIZ research on digital healthcare services and the experiences of patients and healthcare professionals in Croatia.
